How is good is the sequel to Mortal Kombat?

Review: If you go and see this movie it is for one of these reasons: (1) You enjoy video games like Mortal Kombat, or (2) you want to watch a super sick action movie. I went and saw this for #2. The movie is focused around the Mortal Kombat Tournament. The tournament is a 5v5 tournament where people are battling against each other to the death. Each team has 5 lives, and the team wins by getting the other down to 0 lives, i.e., killing all of the others (that’s why it’s called Mortal Kombat). Because the movie is so focused on the tournament, this movie is not for those who get queasy at the sight of blood, dismemberment, or disfigurement. This movie has some very gruesome deaths, and they do not shy away from it at all.

Even though I have never played a Mortal Kombat game, I had a very fun time with the movie. There were definitely references all over the place to the games (which I didn’t pick up whatsoever), and the story was a bit simple, but that didn’t detract from the effort the movie put into trying to be action packed fun. There was one scene in particular where Liu Kang and Kung Lao were fighting. The visuals and the fight choreography were absolutely stunning, it literally looked like it could have been a fight sequence pulled right out of the games. While this is the one fight that really stood out to me, there were several other sequences that I thought were also very well done.

This movie is actually a sequel to a movie that came out in 2021, and while I haven’t seen it, I have heard that this movie blows that one out of the water. This movie also apparently brings in a ton of the video game characters (like Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage) and brings back fan favorites (like Kano) to really make the connections to the games. Even though I didn’t know who any of these characters were, they did a great job at allowing all of them to have their moment to shine.

Overall, if you want a brutal, yet fun, action movie to watch, give this one a watch. Like me, you don’t even need to see the first movie to enjoy this one. It’s not trying to be the best movie in the world, it’s just trying to let you have a ton of fun while they try to bring the video game to life.
